Description
On a segmented diamond core bit, the segments do all the cutting. Their shape decides how quickly the bit bites into the surface, their height sets how much diamond is available before the crown is worn, and the bond determines whether the bit favours speed or service life. Carbodiam manufactures these segments in its own production centre and offers them in a set of profiles, each developed for a particular drilling condition.
The Carbodiam segment programme comprises Tornador, Sharkor, Rooftop Z, Rooftop, Twin-Top, Notched, Wavor and Premior. All are designed for wet core drilling. Most are aimed at heavily reinforced concrete, with individual profiles extending to hard stone, abrasive aggregates, deep drilling, concrete blocks and masonry materials.
Versions are matched to the core drill: fast specifications for low-power machines and long-life specifications for high-power machines. Selected profiles add versions for fast drilling in heavily reinforced concrete, for abrasive aggregates, or for asphalt, basalt concrete and refractories.
Segments are specified by profile and version, together with the core bit diameter and the machine. Carbodiam’s segmented core bit programme can be customised, so a profile can be matched to a non-standard bit or job.
Key Features and Benefits
Start-up shapes for clean entry
Three families of shape control how a bit starts. Tornador has a continuous crown. Sharkor, Wavor and Premior use a turbo-start shape. Rooftop Z, Rooftop, Twin-Top and Notched are shaped for a quick, precise start.
Self-sharpening for continuous cutting
Sharkor, Rooftop Z, Rooftop, Twin-Top, Wavor and Premior are self-sharpening designs, intended to keep fresh diamond exposed as the segment wears.
Higher speed with less friction
Sharkor, Rooftop Z and Premior are designed for increased drilling speed and lower lateral friction.
Versions matched to drill power
Fast versions are intended for low-power core drills and long-life versions for high-power core drills. Rooftop adds a fast version for rapid drilling in heavily reinforced concrete and an extra-long-life version for high-power drills in abrasive aggregates. Wavor adds an extra-fast laser-welded version and an extra-long-life version for asphalt, basalt concrete and silico-aluminous refractories. Notched combines fast cutting and long life in one specification.
Fixing method
Segments are brazed or laser-welded to the bit body, depending on the profile. Tornador, Rooftop Z, Notched and Wavor are offered in both; Sharkor, Rooftop and Premior are brazed.
Wavor for deep drilling
Wavor is made in segment thicknesses from 2 to 10 mm and is designed for heavily reinforced concrete, hard stone and deep drilling.
Applications and Use Cases
Carbodiam diamond segments are used in wet core drilling for:
- Heavily reinforced concrete: service openings and penetrations through slabs, walls and structural elements, with every profile in the range.
- Concrete with abrasive aggregates: Rooftop, including its extra-long-life version for high-power drills.
- Hard stone: Tornador and Wavor.
- Deep drilling: Wavor.
- Concrete blocks and masonry materials: Premior.
- Asphalt, basalt concrete and silico-aluminous refractories: the Wavor extra-long-life version.
The profile is chosen by the material and its aggregate; the version is chosen by the power of the core drill.

All profiles are specified for wet drilling. Heights and characteristics belong to the profile named in each row and do not apply to every segment. When selecting a segment, consider:
- the material, its aggregate and the density of reinforcement
- the power of the core drill
- whether drilling speed or segment life matters more
- the drilling depth
- the core bit diameter and the fixing method required

Buy Diamond Segments from Global Source Middle East
Two core bits of the same diameter can drill very differently because of what is on the crown. Choosing the Carbodiam segment profile and version for the concrete and the machine is what turns a standard bit into one that keeps its speed through reinforcement.
Global Source Middle East supplies Carbodiam diamond segments and segmented core bits to drilling contractors and construction teams in the UAE. Let us know the material, the core drill and its power, the bit diameters and the drilling depth, and we will quote the segment profile and version that suit the work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Carbodiam segment should I choose for heavily reinforced concrete?
Every profile in the range is designed for heavily reinforced concrete. Rooftop also suits abrasive aggregates, Tornador and Wavor suit hard stone, Wavor suits deep drilling and Premior suits concrete blocks and masonry.
What is the difference between fast and long-life segments?
Fast versions are intended for low-power core drills and favour drilling speed. Long-life versions are intended for high-power core drills and favour service life.
Are these segments for dry drilling?
No. The segment profiles are specified for wet drilling. Carbodiam’s dry-drilling core bits are covered in its Diamond Drills range.
Are segments brazed or laser-welded?
It depends on the profile. Tornador, Rooftop Z, Notched and Wavor are offered brazed or laser-welded; Sharkor, Rooftop and Premior are brazed.
Can segments be matched to a non-standard core bit?
Carbodiam’s segmented core bit programme can be customised. Share the bit diameter and the job, and we will confirm the options.
